Johor

Johor is a state in southern Peninsular Malaysia with a 250-mile coastline along the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea. Its economy developed after the railway was extended to Singapore in 1919, and it's a significant producer of oil palms, coconut, and pineapple. Johor's shallow harbours make its trade dependent on Singapore's port facilities, and it's connected to Singapore by a causeway. The capital city is Johor Bahru, with other important towns including Muar, Mersing, Segamat, and Batu Pahat. Johor covers an area of 7,331 square miles with an estimated population of around 3.3 million.

Johor is one of the states in Malaysia that is aiming to become a smart city by 2030. The state government has developed a smart city blueprint, which is expected to help Johor achieve its aspirations of becoming a sustainable and liveable city. The blueprint focuses on six areas: smart mobility, smart environment, smart governance, smart economy, smart living, and smart people. To achieve this, the state government plans to leverage on digital technology, real-time data, and communication to enhance urban development and management.

Johor Bahru is one of the six city councils that will receive a smart city upgrade, with the rollout of a centralised citizen services solution project in collaboration with digital infrastructure solution provider Quantela Inc. The project is expected to be completed by December 2025 and will create a central platform that unifies urban observatory and digital citizen services platforms, integrating with IoT and non-IoT components across the city councils. The platform will enable authorities to access unlimited insights and data analytics on a single dashboard, leading to improved quality of life, economic growth, and efficient urban management practices.
